Program Description

The goal of the Basic Environmental Health Program (BEHP) is to equip entry level environmental health personnel with the basic knowledge, skills and abilities needed to develop competency in their initial and future duties.  The BEHP is a made up of five online courses, 13 live training courses, as well as three field exercises conducted with a qualified mentor at the student's home office.

Students expecting to receive a certificate of completion must :

1) attend all live training courses and pass each exam with a score of 70% or higher.

2) complete the following on-line courses (links to these courses are provided on the registration web site  http://www.albany.edu/sph/coned/behp.htm  or at the link under section detail under the course listing in  your "My Courses".

  • UASPH-201: Orientation to Public Health (prerequisite to the classroom session of UASPH-PH 101, Introduction to Public Health in NYS)
  • UACPHP-206: Field Epidemiology (please note that this online course should be completed prior to attending the classroom session of UASPH-PH 103a, Communicable Disease Control)
  • UASPH-042: Exploring Cross-Cultural Communication
  • UASPH-068: Practicing Cross-Cultural Communication (please note participants only need to complete  one of the three scenarios)
  • UACPHP-200: Microbiology: An Introduction (prerequisite to the classroom session of UASPH-PH 103B, Public Health Microbiology)

3) complete the following field exercises: (copies of the field exercises work sheets and instructions are also available at http://www.albany.edu/sph/coned/behp.htm )

  • UASPH-EH 107-FE:  Food Service Establishment Inspection (please note that this field exercise requires the completion of two on-line FDA courses)
  • UASPH-EH 108-FE: Swimming Pool Inspection
  • UASPH-EH 109-FE: Non-Community Water Supply Inspection

 

Although all Environmental staff are encouraged to register for and attend as many of the modules as they like, staff employed in sanitarian titles who have not previously completed the BEHP  (mandated by Part 11 of the State Sanitary Code), will receive priority. Students should complete their registration at least 10 days prior to the first class date to ensure adequate time for confirmation and to receive direction on completing the field exercises.
