Program Description

Welcome to the New Public Health Educator Core Curriculum.

Changes to the State Sanitary Code require all newly hired public health educators at local health departments (LHDs) in New York State changes to complete a minimum of 15 hours of applicable continuing education within their first year of employment

The Public Health Educator Continuing Education Program (formerly: PHEd Core Curriculum) was developed to assist in meeting this requirement. We have revised the 2010 version of the curriculum to include new Program Evaluation and Assessment courses.

Intended Audience:

  • Public Health Educators (hired after August 20, 2008.)
  • All Public Health Educators and titles which involve public health education responsibilities are encouraged to complete the program.

Notes:

  • The Program must be completed within the individual’s first year of employment.
  • ALL public health educators are encouraged to take the Program.
  • If a newly hired Public Health Educator should have any difficulty completing the program within the first year of employment, they should contact LMS Administration at edlearn@health.ny.gov.

The Core Curriculum covers key areas of public health education, including:

  • The role of public health education;
  • Assessment and evaluation;
  • Public speaking, media and relations;
  • Program planning in the real world;
  • Public health informatics; and
  • Working with a community.

Courses:

The program consists of eight (8) online courses.  All courses are organized and available for enrollment through the Program Catalog and Program Enrollment tool on the NYLearnsPH.com LMS.

Enrolling in the Program:

Scroll down to the bottom of the program description page, you will find a Course Status Table displaying your status for each course in the program.  To enroll in the program you must click on the “Begin Program Enrollment” button below the course status table. On the resultant page you must scroll down beneath the course status table and enroll (choose section and continuing education credits, if applicable) for each program course that you are not yet enrolled in or have not yet completed.

If you have completed any of the constituent program courses outside of the LMS, it will not display as complete on the LMS.  To correct this, please contact the LMS administrator at edlearn@health.ny.gov and include electronic copies of any relevant completion certificates.

If you have any questions about the Continuing Education requirement, program/course enrollment or completion email edlearn@health.ny.gov or call 518-473-4223 and ask to speak with Tom Reizes or Abbey Greenbaum.
