Course Description

Program Description: In order to properly care for a diabetic patient at home, you must first understand diabetes. Knowing basic management skills and dietary needs for the disease can help prevent the need for emergency care, and the onset of long-term health problems. This program will provide information you need to know in order to ensure your patient’s health continues to thrive at home.

Linda Jennings, MS, RD, LD, Nutritional Assistant Administrator, Bureau of Home & Community Services, Alabama Department of Public Health.

Objectives:

  • Understand the signs, symptoms, causes, types, and complications associated with diabetes.
  • Describe special precautions taken when providing personal care for a diabetic patient.
  • Know what to report to a nurse when taking care of a diabetic patient.
  • Learn about the nutritional needs of a diabetic patient. List tools for use in planning and preparing meals for a diabetic patient.
