Course Description

Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. Each year, approximately 443,000 Americans die from tobacco-related illnesses. For every person who dies from tobacco use, 20 more people suffer with at least 1 serious tobacco-related illness. In addition, tobacco use costs the U.S. $193 billion annually in direct medical expenses and lost productivity.

This course provides a foundation for understanding the public health effects and impact of tobacco use and reasons for integrating tobacco use intervention into public health programs.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the human cost of Tobacco Use.
  • Identify at least five reasons for integrating tobacco use interventions into public health programs and services.
  • Indicate what is the reality versus myth regarding tobacco use.
  • Illustrate the importance of countermarketing health campaigns related to tobacco use can enhance school and community based efforts.
