Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States. A new prevention campaign, Million Hearts, is hoping to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes over the next 5 years by working with communities to educate the public about CVD. Program faculty will discuss this new campaign as well as other prevention efforts. A cardiovascular disease survivor will also share their personal battle with the disease.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

1. Define secondary prevention and treatment guidelines for survivors of cardiovascular disease.

2. Explain the 2012 Million Hearts Campaign to improve heart health.

3. Provide a public health perspective on the epidemiology of cardiovascular  disease in Alabama.

4. Discuss the American Heart Association’s policy and advocacy initiatives to address hypertension and trans fat legislation..
